Tangshan Library (New Library) is a large-scale comprehensive library, located in Tangshan Nanhu Park, the southwest Lake bank, north of Lake West Road. The total building area of the library is 25,730 square meters, with six floors, including five floors above ground and one floor below ground. The total height of the building is 28.5 meters. The total design volume of the library is 3 million volumes. The library is also a key supporting project for the 2016 Tangshan World Horticultural Exposition. It was completed and put into use at the end of 2015 and has become one of the most important public cultural facilities in Tangshan.
The plane of a library comes from a "bookcase" which falls on the "ink pond" of the four sides. The four directions of the building are the main entrance, the office and Book entrance, the elderly, the barrier-free entrance and the children's reading entrance. The first to fourth floors of the building are public functional spaces such as collection, borrowing, reading and learning, communication and speech; the fifth floor is for internal functions such as office management, cataloging and restoration; the underground one is for garage, equipment rooms, and the internal dining room of the library.
As the "big study" of Tangshan people, the shape and facade design of library buildings reflect the character and characteristics of Tangshan city: stable and open, calm, simple and without loss of cultural connotation. Grey-white burning granite, medium-grey broken bridge aluminum doors and windows frame and dark LOW-E glass curtain are structured together. Giant square boxes with two to four layers of side facades and gray metal vertical "sunshades" of varying spacing, like "bookshelves" and "barcodes," become abstract symbols that are easy to read and evoke associations. The staggered short wall at the bottom and the long concave balcony at the top form a "three-stage" pattern in proportion to the central three-storey "sunshade" facade, and enrich the expression through shadows in a highly refined and carefully used unified architectural vocabulary.
The function and spatial layout of the library presents a clear vertical "sandwich" structure: the box formed by the reading and office space on both sides of the library holds a huge atrium with a three-level open reading platform as the core, and the lower part of the platform is the library and the professional reading room (ancient books and special collections, etc.). The external form faithfully reflects the inside. The functional logic of the Department.
When the reader enters the entrance hall through the folded glass curtain entrance of the cliff-like layers, he suddenly sees the light before his eyes, and the space suddenly opens up - a grand three-sided enclosing space, three-tiered huge platform to form a "book mountain" like landscape, transparent roof skylights to fill the whole space with sunlight. The stepped platform is separated from the borrowing space on both sides by a high "courtyard" and connected to each floor by a "bridge". The thick and concise frame walls on both sides of the atrium form the boundary of the atrium space. The orange wood decoration is different from the soft wood color of the tall book wall of the atrium, suggesting the difference between the attributes of "architecture" and "furniture". The enclosed "book wall" goes beyond the practical scale and functional needs, and creates the image of "public study" in the city.
The tall open space and the roof steel truss painted with dark grey fire retardant paint originate from the refinement and subtle transformation of the spatial image of traditional industrial buildings. The "flyover" over the entrance hall on the fifth floor reminds us of the "crane beam" in the factory building, which suddenly adds to the dramaticity of the whole space and makes this grand. There is a cultural connection between space and Tangshan, which is known as the cradle of modern industry.
Through rational analysis of base environment and urban space, careful and restrained use of architectural language, special consideration and innovation of structural seismic resistance, and grasp of contemporary characteristics and future development trend of public libraries, the designers of Tangshan Library put urban space, architecture, structure, materials and landscape into consideration. The unity of the elements makes the building present clear functional logic, strong spatial effect and rich cultural expression, thus creating a strong sense of the whole building. Its open space pattern conforms to the contemporary characteristics, and its simple and powerful appearance and grand but friendly interior space form a dramatic contrast effect, giving people a deep impression. Its abstract and intuitive metaphors of "book mountain", "ladder" and "knowledge factory" also make it a "big book" that can be understood by the public, and realize the universal ideal that "snow in the spring" and "chin-pa people" can enjoy. The library has thus fulfilled its unique and important social values - not only the space for the storage, dissemination and sharing of knowledge, but also a public place open to all citizens. The library is no longer only the sanctuary of knowledge, but also a bridge linking the spiritual world with the external world and providing space for the placement of the soul. And this value is particularly valuable in the era of "reading" when picking up a cell phone.
