Confucius said that "benevolent people enjoy mountains, wise people enjoy water" and “Shan Shui” is the representative of Chinese art and the symbol of Chinese culture. This is an unsuccessful architectural design scheme for a competition.Shandong Province is the hometown of Confucius, Mount Tai is the first of China's traditional five mountains, and the Yellow River flows into the sea in Shandong. Confucius said that "benevolent people enjoy mountains, wise people enjoy water" and “Shan Shui” is the representative of Chinese art and the symbol of Chinese culture. The design of Shandong Art Museum, with a total construction area of 63000 square meters, makes a unique interpretation of Shandong's regional culture through the abstract treatment of "mountain" and "water". The huge rocks on the calm water surface, collision, cracking and aggregation, metaphorically reveal culture and art in Shandong's long history and civilization conflict, integrate and penetrate, and reflect the philosophy of "combination of hardness and softness" and "harmony of yin and Yang" of Oriental culture. The building is divided into four relatively closed volumes as the main exhibition halls by a cross shaped public space. The whole building is similar to a Chinese characters "田"(farmland), which implies China's three thousand year long agricultural civilization, while the cross shaped public space metaphors the invasion of Western Christian civilization. The exterior of the building is dry hanging stone with bronze texture, and bronze ware is the most representative cultural symbol of Chinese civilization. The internal public space of the building is like a canyon, and the sky is illuminated from above. The contrast between the external dignified sense of history and the internal flexible sense of future presents a surrealistic atmosphere.Nature, history, culture, art, man and souls meet here.
