The project land is located in the center of the science and education eco-city, located in the north of Zhangjiagang city, surrounded by residential buildings, educational and cultural buildings, with superior natural landscape. Surrounded by the surrounding secular buildings, the church, as a religious building, should play a positive role in improving the cultural and spiritual life taste of the new district.

Architectural design

The building does not only a simple worship space,but puts forward a series of complex functional requirements around religious activities: the complicated checklist is divided into two parts, namely, religious functions and daily auxiliary functions, and the two functions are set separately, to ensure the simplicity of religious space to the greatest extent. The two functions are connected through the library gallery, the wall, and the inner courtyard.

The architectural form cancels the complicated decorative details of the traditional church, and only abstracts the most basic geometric forms (rectangles and triangles) to complete the architectural shape, bringing a pure and sacred form effect. The facade suggests the shape of the cross by the gaps between the blocks. The grand and luminous cross on the facade is the most striking and direct religious symbol of the building.

The church is carefully designed. The whole path starts from the starting point and relies on the change of the wall setting and transparency. The sight and light undergo several changes before they can finally reach the chapel for religious activities. The psychology of the believers is cleverly influenced by the architecture.

Landscape design

The west side of the church base creates the natural landscape view of the outer corridor of the main hall and the reading gallery, and maintains the green landscape on the south side of the base; it clearly divides the worship space and auxiliary space, and creates a pleasant small green environment for worship and clergy. The north and west squares are green with lawns, which set off the natural and peaceful religious atmosphere of the church.

 Ecological strategy

This scheme emphasizes the concept of sustainable development of environmental protection and energy saving, and takes the passive building energy saving design as an important principle in the scheme creation. The building form of the whole scheme is centralized and complete, making the body size coefficient of the building fully meet the standard of energy saving.

As a large space, the chapel opens its Windows on the high side, which plays the role of natural ventilation and lighting. The roof rainwater is recovered to the water body, and permeable floor tiles can effectively collect rainwater to reduce ground rainwater runoff; solar lamps to reduce the use of electricity; and all toilets use water-saving sanitary appliances (water-free urinal, water-saving toilet and induction switches).
